House Clearance vs Skip Hire in Dublin: Which Makes More Sense?
When a house needs emptying, the first instinct is often "get a skip". Sometimes that's right. Often it isn't. Here's an honest comparison from a company that does house clearances every day.
Where a skip wins
A skip is a good tool when you're doing a renovation over several weeks, generating rubble and building waste bit by bit, and you have somewhere off-road to put it. It's also fine if you genuinely have the time, the people and the back to fill it yourself.
Where a clearance wins
- Effort. With a skip you do all the carrying — wardrobes down the stairs, mattresses out the door, everything from the attic. With a clearance, the crew does it.
- Permits and parking. In most of Dublin a skip on the street needs a council permit and a legal parking space. A truck arrives, loads and leaves.
- Volume. A full house rarely fits in one skip. Two or three skips, each waiting to be filled and collected, stretches the job over weeks. A crew and a truck clears the same house in a day.
- Recycling. A mixed skip is tipped as a mixed load. We sort as we go: reusable furniture for donation, metals, wood, cardboard and electricals for recycling, WEEE handled properly, and only the remainder to licensed waste facilities.
- Sensitivity. For a bereavement or hoarded home, sorting through belongings carefully — and finding the photographs, documents and valuables — is part of the job. A skip can't do that.
What about cost?

What we can say is that once you add up skip hire, the permit, your own time and possibly a second skip, a clearance is very often the cheaper option for a full house — and it's always the faster one.
