Basements tend to combine everything that makes a clearance hard: narrow external steps, low ceilings, poor light, damp, and heavy items that went down once and never came back up — freezers, boilers, workbenches, sofas, boxes of paperwork gone soft with moisture. Basement clearances in Dublin's period houses

Water and basements go together. After a leak or a flood, carpets, furniture, boxes and clothing quickly become mouldy and unusable.
